Aadhaar Card Security Tips: The Unique Identification Authority of India UIDAI recently said that Aadhaar holders are advised to keep certain things in mind while using and sharing their Aadhaar numbers. According to UIDAI, the Aadhaar system is based on a solid strategy and a solid technological foundation, and it has evolved into a critical digital identity infrastructure. Here are some simple but important safety tips. UIDAI wants Aadhaar card holders to follow this while using and sharing their UIDAI Aadhaar number.

Make sure you download your Aadhar card only from the official UIDAI portal – https://eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/genricDownloadAadhaar.
Avoid using public PC/Laptop in Internet Cafe/Kiosk for downloading e-Aadhaar. However, if you do so, delete all the downloaded copies of the e-Aadhaar.

UIDAI has allowed Aadhaar card holders to lock Aadhaar biometrics. You can use the mAadhaar app or this link to lock/unlock your Aadhaar. https://resident.uidai.gov.in/aadhaar-lockunlock. This service requires your VID or Virtual ID. VID is a temporary, 16-digit number that is mapped to the Aadhaar number.

Check your Aadhaar authentication history on a regular basis. You can check the history of 50 Aadhar authentication in the last 6 months. The exact date and time of authentication is mentioned, which can help you to notice if any wrong authentication has happened. This will help you keep track of any authentications you haven’t done. If you find something wrong, report it to 1947 or help@uidai.gov.in.

Passwords provide the first line of protection against unauthorized access to your personal information. It is okay to set a 4 digit password for your m-Aadhaar app.

Not a security tip, a suggestion to Aadhaar card holders regarding security: UIDAI says if you don’t want to disclose your Aadhaar number, you can use VID or masked Aadhaar, it’s valid is and is accepted. To get VID/masked Aadhaar, one can download Aadhaar from here https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/genricDownloadAadhaar

E-Aadhaar is also eligible for online/offline authentication. To verify offline, scan the QR code on the e-Aadhaar or Aadhar letter, or Aadhar PVC card. To do online authentication, enter Aadhaar number 12 on the link. https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/verifyAadhaar

Make sure your mobile number is updated on your Aadhar card. If you have any doubts about whether your correct mobile number or email is linked with Aadhaar or not, you can verify it on the UIDAI website.

Another important security tip is to never share your Aadhaar OTP and personal details with anyone. UIDAI tells people that they will never get a call, SMS, or email from UIDAI asking for your Aadhaar OTP.
