Polio in Kolkata: Polio virus has been found in sewage water in six areas of Kolkata. After this, continuous monitoring is done. Officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Eastern Regional Office of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) are monitoring improper gutter sewerage facilities and high rates of open defecation based on certain parameters.

Where was the virus found?

The virus was also found at Shyamlal Lane, the World Vision School neighborhood, Dhapa Lockgate, Maheshtala, and Narkeldanga, in addition to Metiabruz. Besides this, KMC officials have decided to take additional measures to find out if there is any polio victim in the areas. Councilors of all 144 wards under KMC have been directed to use their own infrastructure to identify polio victims. Similar instructions have also been sent to the station in-charge officers of the KMC area.

A special polio vaccination campaign will be run from June 19

Meanwhile, the state health administration has designated a number of districts in which a special polio vaccine campaign will begin on June 19. Howrah, Hooghly, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, North Dinajpur, Malda, and Murshidabad are some of these districts. All government medical colleges and hospitals have been directed to conduct stool tests on all immunity-deficient children admitted there. According to preliminary findings, there are two possible explanations for the presence of poliovirus in sewage water.

First of all, the feces of a child suffering from polio is feared to be found in the drain water. It’s very likely that the second polio vaccine will be discovered in the same water. The last polio victim in West Bengal was found in Kolkata in 2011. India was proclaimed polio-free by the World Health Organization in 2014.
