Qatar World Cup: There will be four tantalizing matchups on Wednesday when Groups C and D of the World Cup come to a close.
Argentina defeats Poland to win the group,
Argentina completed the task with a 2-0 victory over a pitiful Poland team, which also advanced to the knockout rounds on goal differential.
It took almost 30 minutes before a shot ever threatened the goal, and it went Argentina’s way when Julián Alvarez’s attempt was stopped.
Marcos Acua’s follow-up shot sailed just wide of the post.
When Alvarez’s close-range shot required Wojciech Szczesny to make a save. Argentina was awarded a penalty after it appeared that the Poland goalkeeper had elbowed Messi in the face.
Messi subsequently attempted to convert the penalty, but Szczesny saved it, keeping the score at 0-0.
Alexis MacAllister scored his first goal for Argentina just one minute into the second half, outwitting both the Polish goalkeeper and the entire defense to give Argentina the advantage.
In the midst of Argentina’s continued pressure on Poland. Alvarez returned Lionel Scaloni’s faith in him by turning inside the box and scoring with an incredible finish.
Two minutes later, Messi again forced a strong save from Szczęsny.
As Poland appeared to be falling apart, Messi made a fantastic pass to Alvarez. But this time his powerful shot hit the side netting.
In the second half, they merely made no effort to attack, and their defensive play was nearly sufficient.
Sadness for Mexico as the victory is insufficient
Mexico knew they needed to win by a wide margin to break Poland’s goal-scoring streak in order to move on to the knockout rounds.
Despite the fact that their 2-0 victory tied them with Poland in the group standings, they lost out by that goal differential.
Tata Martino’s team nearly capitalized on a feeble Saudi Arabia effort in the first minutes, sprinting down the field to put Alexis Vega through on goal.
But goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais swiftly reacted and blocked the chance.
When Chávez nearly produced another spectacular free-kick, lightning almost struck twice.
However, goalie Al-Owais was able to block the shot this time.
Mexico’s Uriel Antuna had the ball in the net with a goal that would have moved them ahead of Poland into a qualifying slot, but it was painfully overturned for offside.
Salem Al-Dawsari scored in the waning seconds to give Poland a boost as they fought for the win, giving Saudi Arabia the opportunity to score as well.
