The premium segment (Rs 30000 and over) has contributed 11 percent to the shipments of 5G phones in India. And 35 percent of the total market revenue in 2022. This is the highest percentage ever. Samsung had the lead in 2022, in terms of volume share, with a 22 percent share which was then followed by Apple in India as per Counterpoint Research. In terms of the volume of shipment, Xiaomi led the market in 2022 with a 20% percent share and was followed by Samsung.
Xiaomi dropped to third place in Q4 2022.
Samsung and Vivo take the first and second positions respectively. 5G smartphones accounted for 32 percent of the market in 2022. Samsung was the top 5G manufacturer in 2022, with a 21 percent share.
Apple continues to be the top performer in the premium smartphone market.
And its iPhone 13 emerging as the most popular model. Apple also was the top market player in the fourth quarter of 2022 in terms of the value of the shipment. “Consumer demand began to decline in the second quarter of last year as the world economy was hit by numerous macroeconomic problems, including the highest inflation in history, rising unemployment, and geopolitical tensions impacting India’s economy, too,” said a senior research analyst Prachir Singh.
In the second quarter.
The accumulation of inventory across all channels the second quarter resulted in less-than-expected shipments during the second quarter. “We consider that supply and demand conditions will continue to influence the market through the first half of 2023, before improving towards the end of 2023 because of the festive season and the upgrade to 5G devices,” Singh added. The number of smartphones sold in India dropped 9 percent YoY and will exceed 150 million units by 2022, as per the report.
The decrease is the second largest ever recorded.
The Indian smartphone market could be attributed to the drop in the budget. And entry-level segments that were hit by supply shortages at the start of the year. They then saw decreased demand throughout the entire year. “While the entry-level and budget segments were the most affected the premium segment was free of the effects and experienced an increase of double-digits. Manufacturers’ focus has increased on upgrades for consumers who want top features and, perhaps more importantly, access to various financing schemes,” said research analyst Shilpi Jain.
In the overall picture, India’s smartphone market revenue was flat, despite a 9 percent drop in shipments YoY. OnePlus increased by 50 percent year-on-year in 2022, driven in part by OnePlus Nord CE 2 series.
