On Sunday (the fourth day against Australia), veteran Indian batsman Virat Kohli reached his 28th century, breaking a drought of nearly 40 months. By scoring one run off Nathan Lyon during this inning, Kohli reached his century in 241 balls, needing only five fours to do it. Since November 2019, this is his first century in a test.
In all formats of international cricket, Virat Kohli now has 75 hundred.
As Virat Kohli reached the century mark, he didn’t bounce around or give himself a chest punch. Relief could be seen on his face when he finished the century. He finished his century, waved to the crowd with his bat and helmet, and kissed his wedding band, which hangs around his neck. Kohli’s bat remained sour during these 40 months, and his Test average hovered around 25. His detractors and supporters were hoping for such an inning during this time.
Great athletes can overcome challenges
and on Sunday, Kohli demonstrated this skill by overcoming a significant challenge and displaying the tenacity of a champion. During the T20 World Cup in Melbourne last year, Virat Kohli did not strike a stunning straight six against Pakistan’s Haris Rauf with complete confidence. He batted aggressively, but he was desperate to reach the three-figure milestone.
On Sunday, Kohli’s performance was an exact replica of Sydney’s double century
by the legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar. After scoring 200 runs in this innings against the Brett Lee-led Australian bowling attack, Tendulkar blasted his go-to cover drive shot. In many respects, this Kohli inning resembled the Tendulkar inning. Also, he didn’t tempt the balls beyond the off stump. He left the ball outside of Mitchell Starc’s and Cameron Green’s off stumps for the wicketkeeper despite the challenging conditions for the fast bowlers.
During this time, Kohli smashed his fifth and sixth fours of the innings on balls 89 and 251.
He didn’t hit a four until 162 balls later (27 overs). Virat Kohli failed to hit a single four during the first session of the fourth day. After being liberated of the pressure of recording a century, Kohli began to play quickly and frequently sent the ball over the boundary line.
At 145 for one, Virat Kohli played his first fluid cover drive.
After hitting this four off Cameron Green, he did so for the second time in a row, surpassing the 150-run threshold on a spectacular on-drive. Along the way, Kohli demonstrated his athleticism by racing quickly and trading runs with Akshar Patel. The Motera Maidan has seen a lot of incredible accomplishments.
