By 2025, WhatsApp plans to stop supporting older Android smartphones. WhatsApp will stop functioning on Android phones running Android KitKat or later on January 1, 2025. Due to this modification, users of earlier Android devices will need to update their phones to keep using WhatsApp.
For what reason was the decision made?
Because the hardware in certain older Android phones cannot support WhatsApp’s new features, the app is discontinuing support for them. This is also understandable given that WhatsApp increased its AI efforts with other AI features after adding support for Meta AI earlier this year. For those who are unaware, Google discontinued support for the Android KitKat operating system earlier this year. The KitKat was first released in 2013.
Won’t function on these phones
Due to a recent regulation, many outdated Android smartphones will no longer be able to access WhatsApp. Many older Android phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, Motorola Moto G (1st generation), Motorola Razr HD, Moto E 2014, HTC One X, HTC One X+, HTC Desire 500, HTC Desire 601, LG Optimus G, LG Nexus 4, LG G2 Mini, LG L90, Sony Xperia Z, Sony Xperia SP, Sony Xperia T, and Sony Xperia V, will not support WhatsApp.
Notably, WhatsApp
also declared that iPhones running iOS 15.1 or later will no longer be supported. This most likely indicates support for the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. However, iPhone users have until May 5, 2025, to buy a new device and replace it.
