When this comet was first sighted in 2017, it was named K2, reports SPACE.com. When it makes its closest approach to our planet on July 14, the comet will be about 168 million miles (270 million kilometers) from Earth.

People can tune in to the live webcast of the Virtual Telescope Project and watch it online from 6:15 pm onwards. This comet has been continuously moving towards Earth for the last five years. Comets, which are mostly composed of frozen gases, rock, and dust, become active as they approach the Sun. The Sun’s heat heats the comet very quickly, causing its solid ice to turn directly into gas and form a cloud around the comet, known as a coma.
This comet was already active
Interestingly, K2 was already active when it was first discovered in 2017 between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus, which is about 1.49 billion miles (2.4 billion km) away from the Sun. It is being told that this comet had a very large coma. Whereas the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) suggested that K2’s nucleus maybe 18 to 100 miles (30 to 160 km) wide.
Constantly moving towards the solar system
As this comet is moving towards the solar system, it is getting faster. On July 14, this comet is expected to brighten to magnitude 8 or 7, which, unfortunately, is still too dim to be seen.
