Do you know who sent the First SMS 30 years ago & what it contained?

According to recent data, millions of people still use SMS texts every day despite the various modern options for messaging.

Text messages have a significant impact on everyday life today, as millions of individuals exchange text messages every day over a variety of channels.

According to recent data, SMS is used to send and receive one in three text messages nowadays (Short Message Service).

Do you, however, know when and by whom the first text message (SMS) in history was sent?

30 years ago, the First SMS was sent.

The Independent reports that the first text message, which wished for Christmas, was sent on December 3, 1992.

Merry Christmas, a 15-character short message, was the first text message ever sent and was delivered via the Vodafone network.

Who was the first to text?

Neil Papworth, a Vodafone engineer, used a computer to send the first text message ever to his other partner Richard Jarvis, the company’s director.

Richard received this SMS on his Orbitel 901 phone.

SMS is still widely used.

According to a survey conducted by the communications company Infobip, 30% of respondents said they send messages every day, and 54% said they send messages by SMS.

Nikhil Shoorji, the country manager for Infobip UK, noted that in the past 30 years, messaging technology has advanced quickly, with people now utilizing everything from WhatsApp to Skype.

Although some might claim that SMS is losing ground to other messaging systems in the popularity stakes, our study finds quite the reverse.

I had no idea texting would take off as it has: Neil

“When SMS was first delivered in 1992, it was not understood that texting would become so popular and that millions of people would use it daily,” said Neil Papworth, the Vodafone engineer who sent the message.
