Breaking News: Being on time for an interview is a good idea, but is it ever improper to come early? In a LinkedIn post, Atlanta cleaning service owner Matthew Pruett stated that he did not pick a candidate based only on his availability.
Viral Job Interview: Being on time for the interview is a good thing, but is it ever okay to arrive too early? In a LinkedIn post, Atlanta cleaning service owner Matthew Pruett stated that he did not hire an applicant simply because he arrived for the interview twenty-five minutes early. On social media, this message generated a lot of discussion.
Why didn’t you get the job?
Matthew Pruett wrote in his LinkedIn post, “Last week a candidate arrived 25 minutes early for the interview. This was the main reason I did not hire him.” He asked people if it was okay to arrive so early. Later they told him that it was okay to come a little early, but arriving too early shows that the candidate does not understand time management. He said, “I felt uncomfortable with him coming so early to my small office. He could hear my business calls. I felt rushed.”

What is the right time?
Matthew says it’s acceptable to arrive five to fifteen minutes early for the interview. It may be inconvenient to arrive sooner. He thinks it would be considered impolite to arrive so early. Opinions were split after this post went viral. While the majority supported the candidate, others supported Matthew’s choice. One user wrote, “This is a very absurd decision. Send him to me, I will give him a job immediately.”
Another said, “Who knows, maybe his bus arrived early? Or was there no other way he could have been on time? He just made sure he wasn’t late.” Many believed that being early was a sign of diligence and responsibility rather than an error. Some people find it beneficial to arrive early, whereas others may find it inconvenient. During a job interview, even minor details can have a significant impact.
