Global NCAP Updated Crash Test, Safety Rating of Indian Cars

The reports of the safety rating of new cars has been published by Global NCAP in November 2022.

These safety tests were done under the campaign ‘Safer Cars For India’. Global NCAP has updated its crash test protocols, the new safety tests now include three-point seatbelts for rear passengers, rear seat belt reminders, active safety systems, and stable structure.

Recently 4 new cars were tested under these updated protocols, these cars are – Mahindra Scorpio N, Maruti S-Presso, Maruti Swift, and Maruti Ignis.

Previously, Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq were tested by Global NCAP as per their updated protocols, these were the first cars to be tested under the updated protocols. Both the cars are based on the same platform, Taigun and Kushaq received a 5-star rating in safety tests conducted in October. They both hold the top position on the safety list and have the highest score of 71.64.

Global NCAP safest cars for Adults

According to the latest Global NCAP report, Mahindra Scorpio N has secured a safety rating of 5-star which makes it the 3rd car in India to get a 5-star rating under the updater protocols after the Taigun and Kushaq. Mahindra XUV300 and XUV700 are the other two cars of Mahindra that have a safety rating of 5 stars. Another car manufacturer that holds three 5-star ratings cars is Tata. Tata has Punch, Altroz, and Nexon with a 5-star safety rating. Soon we could get to see the reports of the safety rating of these cars under the updated protocols. Most of these are expected to maintain their current ratings when tested as per new protocols.

Mahindra sells other cars too but they have a safety rating of 4 stars. Mahindra cars with 4-star Adult safety ratings are Marazzo and Thar. Tata cars with 4-star Adult safety ratings include Tiago, Tigor, and Tigor EV. Other cars with 4-star Adult safety ratings in India are Honda Jazz, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Maruti Brezza, Renault Kiger, Honda City 4th-gen, Nissan Magnite, and Renault Triber.

Talking about the 3-star rating cars, we have – Kia Carens, Maruti Ertiga, Hyundai i20, Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Creta. Creta will get a facelift version in 2023 which has already received a 5-star safety rating in the ASEAN NCAP crash test.

Global NCAP safest cars for Child Safety

In child safety, the top positions are held by Taigun and Kusha. Currently, India only has these two cars with a 5-star Child safety rating. Mahindra Scorpio N did get a 5-star rating but only for Adult safety, for child safety, it received only 3 stars with an overall child safety score of 28.93 out of 49. In the list of 4-star Child safety rating cars, we have XUV700, Thar, Punch, Honda City 4th-gen, XUV300, and Tigor EV.

Global NCAP safest cars Total Points

Taigun and Kushaq have received an overall score of 71.64. Scorpio N comes in 3rd position with an overall score of 58.18. Although Scorpio N did a pretty good job on the Adult safety rating. It lags behind due to the low child safety rating of 3-stars. In the list of Cars with an overall score of more than 50. We have XUV700, Punch, XUV300, Thar, City 4th-gen, & Urban Cruiser.

Scorpio, Alto, Kwid, Ignis, Nios, Seltos, WagonR, and Eeco are in the lowest overall score category according to the Global NCAP. In the updated crash test both S-Presso and Swift have improved their overall score. S-Presso received 23.55 points in the new tests and the Swift has improved from 23.31 points to 35.87 points.
