IMEI Registration: It will be mandatory for mobile phone manufacturers and importers to register the IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity) of their smartphones. All mobile devices sold in India must have their IMEI numbers registered on the country’s counterfeit device prevention platform. The Department of Telecommunications has given this information through a gazette notification on September 26.

26 September The government in a notification issued in this regard on 26 September said that this notification has been issued under the Prevention of Tampering with Mobile Equipment Identification Number (Amendment) Rules, 2022. The portal on which it has to be registered is operational from the year 2020. This registration process will have to be completed before January 1, 2023, after which action can be taken.
Why the government took this big step?
The central government has launched the Central Equipment Identity Register scheme, under which lost or stolen phones can be stopped. The government has also taken this step to prevent misuse of such handsets. The government has taken this significant step since it is aware of the misuse of mobile phones in numerous security-related concerns.
