iPhone users will now receive more safety notifications than ever before. The company is testing new enhanced safety alerts, which could be rolled out in an upcoming update.
Apple is preparing to upgrade its emergency notification system and introduce enhanced safety alerts in the iOS 26.2 update. Several new alerts will be added and each will be given a unique tone to help users respond quickly to emergencies. This feature has been spotted in the developer beta, which means it should be a short time before it reaches users.
How will the new feature work?
Enhanced Safety Alerts will work similarly to Apple’s government and emergency alert system. Currently, Apple’s system supports AMBER Alerts, Public Safety Alerts, and Test Alerts. The new update will provide users with more control, including sound preferences and regional precision settings. This feature will further strengthen Apple’s real-time ecosystem, especially for users in areas with a high incidence of natural disasters.
Apple is currently taking feedback:
Apple has currently rolled out this feature to beta users, who can provide feedback. It can be activated in Settings > Notifications. Here, users will find separate toggles for Earthquake Alerts and Imminent Threat Alerts. The company has also added a privacy option that allows users to share their location with Apple. This will allow Apple to improve the accuracy and speed of notifications during emergencies.
Earthquake alerts are also available on Android:
Android smartphones come with an Earthquake Alert feature. This Google feature alerts users in the event of an earthquake. Google says it has detected more than 2,000 earthquakes since its launch in 2020. In 2023, it detected a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines and sent an alert to approximately 2.5 million people to take cover.
