This is the day that religious texts claim Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were married. In addition, it is said that twelve Jyotirlingas of God also manifested on the day of Mahashivratri. Because of the significance of this day for Hindus, Shivratri is observed on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha every month.

What day is Mahashivratri in 2024?

The Panchang states that Falgun Krishna Chaturdashi, also known as Mahashivratri, will take place on March 8 at 9.57 p.m. and conclude at 6.17 p.m. on March 9. Given that Mahashivratri is only worshipped during the Nishita period, this Muhurta on March 8 would only last 51 minutes, from 12:05 am to 12:56 pm. As a result, only March 8th will be designated as Mahashivratri.

Mahashivratri ritual

On the morning of Mahashivratri, get up early and have a bath. Put on white clothing if you can, think of Lord Shiva, and make a commitment to fast throughout. Worship at an auspicious time after this. Apply Panchamrit to Shivling to do this. Serve saffron water in eight pots. Tie Lord Shiva with a sandalwood tilak. Present them with Belpatra, Bhang, Dhatura, fruits, sweets, sweet paan, sugarcane juice, Tulsi, Kamal Gatte, clothing, and perfume. Present kheer infused with saffron. Continue reciting the Om Namah Shivay mantra at this period. On this occasion, recite the Shiva Purana. Light a lamp at night to maintain vigilance.
