Morbi: Following this accident, the terrible memories of the incident that occurred 43 years prior were revived in the people’s environment. The city was covered in the rotting remains of both people and animals. As a result, an epidemic spread throughout the entire region. As a result, those working there to provide aid also became ill.
Morbi: On Sunday, a traumatic incident took place in Gujarat’s Morbi district. An old cable bridge that crossed the Machhu River collapsed. More than 500 people were on the bridge at the time of the disaster, according to reports. People on the bridge began tumbling into the river when the bridge suddenly collapsed. The accident claimed the lives of over 143 individuals and injured hundreds more.
People thought back to another traumatic accident involving the Machhu river after this one. People were shocked when they thought about this accident. Thousands of people died as a result of this river even roughly 43 years ago. The entire region was a sight of devastation. There was reminded of that event again yesterday by the terrible incident from the previous day.
On August 11, 1979, in the late afternoon, the accident happened.
The accident happened as a result of the Machhu River’s dam collapsing. The year was 1979, and the day was August 11. On the day of Eid, the Machhu river transformed the entire city into a cemetery. In the city, it was incessantly raining. As a result, the Machhu Dam was overflowing and the nearby rivers were under water. The entire city was destroyed in no time. The dam broke on August 11, 1979, around 3:15 pm, and the city was completely submerged by the dam’s water within 15 minutes. Buildings and homes fell right there, giving no time for occupants to recover and escape.
Over 1500 people have passed away.
Around 1500 people died in this accident. In addition to this, about 13000 animals also died. Government documents give this number. The true number was higher still. The flood had left the entire city in dreadful shape. Animals and people alike appeared helpless due to the flood waters. Human and animal corpses were hung from the pillars. Only dead bodies were seen everywhere because the accident had reduced the entire city to rubble.
Rotten bodies were scattered throughout the city.
The smell of the dead bodies was so much when Indira Gandhi visited Morbi a few days after this tragic accident that she had to wear a cloth over her nose. Both human and animal bodies were decaying. All around was a scene of destruction. Organizations and individuals from all across the nation had gathered in Morbi to conduct relief and rescue operations. The sickness also claimed the lives of the leaders who went to Morbi during that time and those working in relief and rescue.
