The Modi administration is running a variety of programs for farmers. The recent unseasonal rains have significantly harmed the wheat crop as well. The administration has now made a new choice while keeping the interests of the farmers in mind. The Center has loosened the quality standards for buying wheat in Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, and Rajasthan in consideration of the advantages to farmers and to prevent panic sales. A senior official provided this information.
Damaged standing wheat crop
The standing wheat crop has been harmed in some areas of these four states by recent unseasonal rains, hailstorms, and strong winds. The administrations of these states demanded a relaxation of the buying regulations. While the purchase of wheat has been delayed in other regions due to unseasonal rains, it is now continuing in Madhya Pradesh. In association with government organizations, FCI purchases wheat.
Quality standards eased for the purchase of wheat crop
“After a regional survey, the quality norms for wheat procurement have been relaxed in Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, and Rajasthan,” said Subodh Kumar Singh, Additional Secretary in the Union Food Ministry. This will ease the farmers’ burden and prevent them from having to sell their wheat at a loss. According to him, the government has increased the allowable percentage of broken and shriveled grains from the previous six percent to 18 percent. He stated that wheat with dry and broken grains up to 6 percent would not be subject to price reductions.
Such wheat will not be subject to a deduction.
Wheat with a luster loss of up to 10% will not be subject to the price reduction, whereas wheat with a luster loss of 10% to 80% will be subject to a uniform price reduction of Rs. 5.31 per quintal. Apart from this, he stated, the percentage of damaged and somewhat damaged grains shouldn’t be higher than 6%. Singh added that the state governments will be solely responsible for any decline in the quality of wheat stock purchased under the laxer standards during storage.
The Center has ordered these state governments
to subtract the amount imposed from the minimum support price of Rs 2,125 per quintal. When compensating farmers for the 13.20 lakh tonnes of wheat they have purchased up till April 10. A similar request to the government of Uttar Pradesh is also being thought about. Up till April 10, the government had purchased 13.20 lakh tonnes of wheat, the majority of which came from Madhya Pradesh. Data from the Food Ministry show that over the same time period, 88,000 tonnes of wheat were purchased in Haryana and about 1,000 tonnes in Punjab.
The official responded
“The procurement was delayed due to unseasonal rains,” when asked about lower procurement in Punjab and Haryana. Because of the modest arrival and purchase, both were modest. The purchase of wheat will, however, increase during the coming days.
