Pamban Bridge: The nation’s prime minister presented a unique gift to the pilgrims traveling to Rameswaram on Ram Navami. Traveling to Rameswaram has became easy since today. Previously taking an hour, the trip will now just take twenty minutes. Pamban Bridge is Asia’s first automated vertical lift railway bridge.
Why is Pamban Bridge special?
Today marks the beginning of this bridge that will connect Rameswaram to the rest of the nation. The 2.08-kilometer journey from Mandapam to Rameswaram is now simpler. High-speed trains and twin tracks are supported by the new bridge’s design. This bridge’s main characteristic is that it opens from the center. In other words, the bridge’s doors open when a ship needs to pass, and the train passes overhead. The bridge opens like ‘Alibaba’s Cave’ when ships need to pass in the sea.
What is special about Pamban Bridge?
The polysiloxane coating on the new stainless steel bridge will shield it from rust and the salty seawater. The only rail bridge connecting Mandapam and Rameswaram is this one. In 2019, this project received approval. This project was supposed to be finished by 2021, but because of delays, it was finished in 2024. Trains on the 72.5-meter bridge will travel between 75 and 80 km/h.
The bridge will open in 5 minutes
There is vertical raising on the bridge. Pressing a single button will raise the bridge. In just five minutes, the bridge will rise to a height of 22 meters. The fact that the bridge that the train crosses is raised so that large ships can pass beneath it is an engineering wonder.
Different from the old
The new bridge has a completely automated vertical lift system, whereas the old bridge used a manual Sherger lift. The new bridge provides air clearance up to 22 meters, whereas the old bridge opened up to 19 meters. High-speed trains are intended to use the new bridge. On the old bridge, trains could reach speeds of 10 km/h; on the new bridge, they will reach speeds of 75 to 80 km/h.
Who built the Pamban Bridge?
Today saw the opening of the Pamban rail bridge, India’s first vertical lift sea bridge. Vertical lift technology was used in the construction of this Pamban bridge by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). This bridge’s development will make getting to Rameswaram simpler. It would now take less time for pilgrims to go to Rameswaram, the location of the famous Ramanathaswamy temple.
How much did it cost
Following the deterioration of the 1914 Pamban bridge, a new bridge was erected. At a cost of Rs. 535 crores, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) is currently rebuilding the Pamban Bridge.
An hour’s success in 20 minutes
It will only take 20 minutes to go from Mandapam to Rameswaram once the Pamban Bridge is built. An alert system has been installed to ensure the safety of trains traversing the bridge. The train will halt and an automated alert signal will sound if the wind speed reaches 58 meters per hour.
