Now, when making UPI payments, people will be able to use fingerprints or Face ID instead of PIN numbers. Biometric authentication has already been introduced for this purpose.
You will no longer need to enter a PIN number when making UPI payments. You can also make payments using FaceID or fingerprint. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched biometric authentication for UPI. It is considered a faster, safer, and more user-friendly option than PINs. The entire biometric authentication process will be on-device and will now replace the PIN number. It’s worth noting that UPI was launched in 2016, and PINs have been used for payments ever since.
Such users will find it easier:
The introduction of biometrics for UPI payments will make it easier for senior citizens and new customers. NPCI stated that until now, creating a UPI PIN required debit card details and Aadhaar OTP verification. Now, with Aadhaar-based face authentication, it will be easier and faster to use. It will also be convenient for those without a debit card. This system will also help prevent fraud. It’s worth noting that several scams involving PIN numbers have surfaced recently, and the RBI has expressed concern.
Withdraw money from ATM using fingerprint or Face ID:
Users can use Face ID and fingerprint to set a UPI PIN. Furthermore, biometric authentication can also be used when withdrawing money from ATMs using UPI. Users will need to opt-in for this, allowing them to choose between using a PIN or Face ID. It’s worth noting that this feature has been in the works for quite some time, and NPCI even organized a hackathon in 2021
Most digital payments are made through UPI:
UPI is the most popular method of digital payment in India. 85 percent of all online transactions in the country are done through UPI alone. On average, this mobile payment platform processes over 20 billion transactions every month, valued at ₹25 lakh crore.
