Some manufacturers like Chevrolet, Fiat, and more recently Ford left India because they could not survive. There are few companies that have become an instant hit as soon as they are launched in India. We have Kia and MG Motors. We also have Citroen which has similar goals as its latest launch C3.
MG wants to recreate Hector’s initial magic and demand with the upcoming Hector with new and improved features
MG’s Hector was also an instant hit, beating the Harrier. But as the Harrier gained more features and a powerful engine, the sales of the Hector declined. MG India’s strategy has always been to offer more features than the competition. But with the feature-loaded XUV700 as a rival, things are not working in Hector’s favor.
Next Gen Hector Render
Pratyush Raut has created the render of Next Gen Hector. This is based on the teaser that MG India released recently. The digital renderings shown in this post are not commissioned by MG India. They are based on teasers and artists’ imagination.
MG Hector is a rebranded Baojun 530 manufactured by Chinese state-owned SAIC-Wuling. But apart from MG Hector and Baojun 530, it is also sold under the names Chevrolet Captiva and Wuling Almaz. But none of these get the “next-gen” treatment that the India-spec Hector is getting.
Hence, India may be the first country to receive these updates and soon others will gradually get the same. We say this because the MG Next Gen Hector is getting a new portrait-style 14” touchscreen like the Mercedes-Benz Model and Tesla Model-S. Not only this. It also gets vertical AC vents instead of horizontal, the dashboard is smaller than the outgoing Hector, and the outgoing model gets a square engine-start button instead of the round button. Lastly, it also gets a yacht-style gear lever inspired by Audi.
It is highly likely that MG will launch the next-gen Hector with seven seats and the older one with just 5 seats with a feature-rich cabin. This way the next-gen Hector will sit above the existing gen Hector and will add all the features. Whereas the current generation Hector will be sold similarly.
Feature additions
Apart from the internal changes mentioned above, the next-gen Hector will get a host of features. For starters, it gets a new big and up-market diamond studded grille, sleek LED DRLs, and lots more elements that will give it an upmarket look. The headlight units are much taller than before and also get LED fog lamps. While the side profile will be largely carried over with new alloy wheels.
At the rear, it will get a new LED taillight unit which will be wider than before. The main feature additions will come in the form of the ADAS system that the rival XUV700 offers. MG already offers the ADAS system on the Gloster SUV and the Astor compact SUV. The next-gen Hector is also likely to get a new savvy top-spec variant that will incorporate all the above-mentioned features.
The Savvy trim is offered on the Gloster and Astor along with ADAS and more, while the Hector tops the Sharp trim. The price of the next-gen Hector is likely to be around Rs 5,000. 1 to 1.5 lakh more than the current Gen Hector variant-wise. We can expect the 2022 Hector to launch around the festive season.
