Gangotri Glacier Melting: Ganga will not always flow like this! Rapidly melting Gangotri Glacier… Study

There are 9575 glaciers in the Himalayas which come on the border of India. Of these, 968 glaciers are in Uttarakhand. Most of the water is quenching the thirst of us humans in some form or the other. Rivers like Ganga, Ghaghra, Mandakini, and Saraswati are giving life to the plains of India. Giving water. Breathing is going on. What if the sources of these rivers run out? There are glaciers. Frozen ice. The heat is on, everything will melt. For example, the Gangotri Glacier has melted 1700 m (1.70 km) in the last 87 years.

Gangotri Glacier Melting

Considered the most sacred river in the country, the Ganges originates from the Gaumukh of this glacier. It is from here that Ganga gets life. Scientist Dr. Rakesh Bhambri of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun has done this study. His study has revealed that from 1935 to 2022, the mouth of the Gangotri Glacier melted by 1700 meters or two and a half kilometers. The reason for this is rising temperatures, less snowfall, and more rain.

Gangotri Glacier Melting1

We and I are the reason for the rising temperature. The decrease in snowfall is also a result of climate change. Dr Rakesh told aajtak.in how the weather is changing. You can watch it now. The monsoon should have gone. But even now it is raining in Dehradun for three days. The same situation will happen in many places. The weather is constantly changing. It is difficult to tell where and how much this weather will affect the Himalayan regions.

Gangotri Glacier is highly unstable

Gangotri Glacier Melting2

Dr. Rakesh told that the Gangotri glacier is 30 km long. It has melted 1700 meters in the last 87 years. It is quick to melt. But someone asks how long it will melt. It’s hard to tell. Because there can be many reasons behind the melting of any glacier. For example, climate change, less snowfall, rising temperatures, frequent rains, etc. Gangotri Glacier is quite unstable. At least that’s part of his mouth. Glaciers will melt at one point or another. This glacier is melting from the mouth.

Can keep an eye on only two dozen glaciers

Dr. Rakesh told that from July 17, 2017, to July 20, 2017, it rained for three consecutive days. Icy substances are added to the soil here. There was a permafrost condition. But due to incessant rains, the mouth of the glacier and its surroundings had rapidly melted. The flow of water downstairs was fast. However, the stability in the rain is very less. The rate of melting of any glacier increases. Also landslides etc. Scientists are currently able to monitor two dozen glaciers. Among them Gangotri, Chorabari, Dunagiri, Dokariani and Pindari are prominent. Now it is not possible to visit every glacier for study. They are in inaccessible places.

When will the Gangotri glacier end, cannot be said

When Dr. Rakesh was asked if Ganga originates from Gangotri Glacier? When will this glacier end? On this question, he said that it is very difficult to tell when it will end. Because there are many reasons behind the melting of glaciers. To do such a study, we need at least 30 years of data. but it’s not like that. We have only 10-12 years of data. Therefore, at the moment it is very difficult to say when the Gangotri glacier will end.

Gangotri Glacier Melting3

Glaciers melt due to many reasons

Dr. Rakesh Bhambri said that now if someone says that 1700 meters have melted in 87 years, then in how many years will the Gangotri glacier melt? That would not be correct. Now, this glacier will be there for centuries. People provide different data in different studies. Its varying results suggest that it will melt in so many years. But it is not necessarily correct. If we look at many other types of studies, from 1935 to 1996, the Gangotri glacier melted by about 20 meters every year. But now it has increased to 38 meters per year.

Will Gangotri Glacier last for 1500 years?

Gangotri Glacier Melting4

Dr. Rakesh said that in the last decade Gangotri has melted 300 meters. If we look at this rate of melting of Gangotri, it melted 1700 meters in 87 years. That is, 19.54 meters in a year. Accordingly, the Gangotri glaciers will melt in 1535 to 1500 years. But it may not be completely accurate. Because we don’t know when the snow will fall. When will it rain? When will the temperature rise? In the future, when more accurate figures are available, it will be possible to tell about this accurately.

Gangotri is the largest glacier in Uttarakhand

Gangotri is the largest glacier in the Himalayas of Uttarakhand. 30 km long. Area of 143 square kilometers. Width from 0.5 to 2.5 km. At one end there is Gaumukh at an altitude of 3950 feet. From where the Bhagirathi river originates. Later, it joins the Alaknanda River at Devprayag to form the Ganges. A central government had told the Rajya Sabha that between 2001 and 2016, the Gangotri glacier lost an area of 0.23 square kilometers. That means the glacier has melted. The main reason for this is the change in rain and snowfall. Also, the rising temperature is different.

The pattern of rain and snow has changed

Dr. Rakesh Bhambri said that the rainfall pattern in Uttarakhand has changed in the last few years. It is raining a lot. Quantity and timing are not fixed. But the snowfall has stopped. Now there will be no snowfall and if it rains more, the glaciers will melt. Local people also testify that now the snowfall is decreasing. It is raining more. That’s why glaciers are melting faster. If this kind of weather continues, then the glaciers present in the Himalayas will break. Then in the year 2021, a disaster like a disaster in the Dhauliganga river in Chamoli district can be seen.

Remember the Kedarnath incident of 2013? Chorabari Lake, made of mud and ice, had rained so much on the glacial lake that it could not bear the weight. ripped out. All of you will remember the devastation that happened after this. If there is more rainfall in the Himalayan regions, the glaciers will continue to melt or break and wreak havoc.
