To combat cyber fraud, the Indian government has taken decisive action. Those who abuse SIM cards will now face severe consequences. The new SIM card Rules state that if someone abuses their SIM card, their name will be added to a blacklist and they will not be able to obtain one for three years.
New SIM card Rules to stop scams
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has taken action to stop cybercrimes involving SIM card abuse in order to safeguard crores of mobile customers. A comprehensive list of those who have misused SIM cards—such as obtaining a SIM card in someone else’s name or sending phony messages—is being compiled as part of this endeavor. TRAI recently issued several regulations to stop fake calls and SMS scams, after which lakhs of mobile numbers were closed.
If convicted, what will the government do?
Those who abuse SIM cards will face severe penalties. SIM card abusers will be placed on a blacklist. It will be six months to three years before they receive a new SIM card. It will now be illegal to send phony texts or obtain a SIM card in someone else’s identity.
Beginning in 2025,
all telecom firms will be unable to issue new SIM cards to those whose names are on the blacklist. Such a list is being prepared by the government. Anyone who violates the rules will have seven days to reply. The government may intervene without prior notification in extremely serious cases. Cybersecurity will be strengthened with the new rules introduced in November 2024. These rules will prevent fraud through SIM cards and people’s trust in telecom services will increase.
