According to information released by
the government on Tuesday, almost 20% of the nation’s Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts remain dormant. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, State Minister of Finance Bhagwat K Karad stated that as of December 6, 4.93 crore of the 10.34 crore inactive PMJDY accounts belonged to women.
Twenty percent of accounts are not active.
He stated that, based on information obtained from banks. Almost 20% of the roughly 51.11 crore PMJDY accounts were dormant as of December 6. A balance of Rs 12,779 crore is inactive. According to him, the percentage of dormant PMJDY accounts is comparable to the overall percentage of dormant accounts in the banking industry. The amount put in inactive PMJDY accounts is roughly Rs 12,779 crore. Or 6.12% of the total amount deposited in PMJDY accounts. He stated that after the account is reopened, depositors may claim. And remove this amount at any time, and it will continue to accrue interest at the rate that applies to active accounts. He stated that banks are working together to lower the number of inactive accounts, and the government is keeping a close eye on their progress.

It has been stated by the Finance Ministry on the social media site ‘X’ that women make up 55.5% of the scheme’s overall beneficiaries. The government states that a total of Rs 2.10 lakh crore was deposited in these accounts as of November 22. However, just zero money was placed into any of the 4.30 crore accounts that were opened under this initiative. The cause of this is that there is no obligation to keep any minimum amount in Jan Dhan’s accounts.
