In the wake of a backlash over discrimination against pregnant women applying for jobs, Indian Bank stated on Monday that it has not changed its policies and that no female candidates had been turned down.

“It has been reported in some parts of the media that the Bank has issued new guidelines that are biased towards women,” the author says. In this regard, the Bank has made no changes to the existing standards,” Indian Bank stated. a statement.

However, in consideration of public opinion, we emphasize that candidates who are pregnant for fewer than 12 weeks are regarded as fit for employment with the Bank. Candidates are allowed to see a licensed medical practitioner after 12 weeks of pregnancy and receive a fitness certificate verifying that they are fit to work in the Bank. Furthermore, if a candidate requests an extension due to pregnancy, the bank will evaluate the request favorably, according to Indian Bank.

According to certain media reports, a recent Indian Bank circular prohibits women who are more than three months pregnant from joining the service, even if they have been recruited through the proper channels.

Earlier in the day, Swati Maliwal, the chairman of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), submitted a warning to Indian Bank for allegedly ‘anti-women’ guidelines proclaiming pregnant women to be ‘temporarily ineligible’ to join the bank. the service. Reserve Bank of India was requested to withhold money from them. RBI) intervene in this matter.

“The Commission has learned that the Bank has enacted guidelines stating that a female candidate who is three months pregnant will be considered ‘temporarily disqualified.'” and will not join immediately on her selection. There will be a delay. In a letter to RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, Maliwal wrote, “She is joining and would lose her seniority later.”

This is a very serious matter. The bank’s purported action appears to be discriminatory and illegal, as it is in violation of the maternity benefit established under the ‘Social Security Code, 2020.’ Furthermore, it discriminates on the basis of gender, which is in violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed to all people under the Indian Constitution, according to the DCW president.

The Delhi Commission for Women has filed a letter to the Managing Director of India Bank, taking suo motu notice of media reports regarding the development of new rules by India Bank for employee recruitment. to the CEO of Indian Bank, requesting a response by June 23, 2022.

This is reflected in the fact that women make up about 29% of the company’s workforce. Indian Bank described itself as “one of the best in the banking business.”

We further declare that no female candidate has been turned down by Indian Bank because she is pregnant. According to the statement, the bank does not engage in any gender discriminating activities.
