Citing significant revisions in the forms and system preparedness, the CBDT stated in May that the ITR filing date will be extended. According to the statement, taxpayers will find compliance easier and reporting more transparent with the amended ITRs.
Important income tax return (ITR) utilities, such as ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-5, ITR-6, and ITR-7, for the current Assessment Year 2025–2026 are still not available, which worries a lot of taxpayers. Experts now think taxpayers would require even more time if these documents don’t arrive soon, even though the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has already moved the filing deadline from July 31 to September 15.
CBDT EXTENDED DUE DATE EARLIER
In May, the CBDT announced the first extension to give taxpayers more time. In its press note, it said, “In view of the extensive changes introduced in the notified Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and considering the time required for system readiness and rollout of ITR utilities for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to extend the due date for filing returns.”
It further added, “To ensure a smooth and convenient filing experience for taxpayers, the due date for filing ITRs, originally 31st July 2025, is extended to 15th September 2025.”
The board also highlighted that the new ITRs for AY 2025-26 have seen major structural and content changes to make compliance easier, boost transparency, and help people file accurate returns.
PENDING UTILITIES FOR PREVIOUS YEARS
Updated return utilities for the prior years, AY 2021–22 and AY 2022–23, which must incorporate modifications from the Finance Act 2025, are still not available, which exacerbates the issue.
AUDIT-RELATED FORMS STILL AWAITED
It goes beyond the standard forms. Additionally, audit-related forms that are required for tax audit cases, such as 3CA/3CB-3CD, have not been made public. Tax professionals are unable to finish audit submissions on time without these.
TAX EXPERTS SEEK MORE TIME
Professionals are pleading with the government to issue another extension due to the large number of outstanding forms. They caution that taxpayers may make mistakes or not file at all if they don’t have enough time. Many have proposed moving the deadlines for audit and non-audit cases to November 30, 2025, and September 30, 2025, respectively.
Another deadline extension is imminent given that the reporting season has been going on for more than 100 days and that crucial ITR utilities are still lacking, according to Abhishek Kumar, Sebi RIA and Founder at SahajMoney. The government must admit that uncontrollable system malfunctions shouldn’t hurt taxpayers who are prepared to file.
NO OFFICIAL WORD YET
The Income Tax Department has not yet provided an update regarding a further extension. However, professionals and taxpayers are left waiting and hoping for a clear announcement soon because deadlines are drawing near and documents are still lacking.
It’s all about waiting for now. Many people will still find it difficult to file their ITRs on time until these forms are made available.
