Washing machines have become a vital household necessity in almost every Indian household. Whether fully automatic or semi-automatic, these machines clean heavy laundry in minutes and simplify our daily chores. However, despite prolonged use, many people overlook basic factors that directly impact machine performance and lifespan, such as proper installation, wall-to-wall distance, water pressure, and plumbing.

Where and how to place the washing machine

Where and how to place the washing machine:

Often, people fit their washing machine wherever they find space, but this is a major mistake. Experts say that improper placement can be a significant contributor to frequent machine breakdowns. The machine should always be placed at least 4 to 6 inches away from the rear wall. This gap helps absorb the machine’s vibrations and prevents excessive pressure on pipes, drainage hoses, and power cables.

If the machine is placed too close, the drum may come into contact with the back surface during the spin cycle, which can increase noise and cause machine parts to wear out more quickly. Bent pipes can obstruct water flow, increasing the risk of leakage or motor damage. Therefore, maintaining a proper distance also prevents the machine from overheating.

If there is stability, the machine will run for years:

The washing machine should always be placed on a flat and sturdy surface. If the floor is uneven, the machine will vibrate more and may repeatedly hit the wall. In such cases, using anti-vibration pads or a sturdy stand can help stabilize the machine.

Don’t tighten the inlet and drainage pipes too tightly. They require gentle natural movement during the washing cycle. When installing a new machine, run it through an empty cycle to ensure it’s not touching the wall.

Take special care in winter

Take special care in winter:

During cold weather, water in the pipes thickens, putting more strain on the motor. If the machine allows, run a warm-water cycle once a week. Also, avoid overloading the machine, as this makes it work harder in winter. After washing, dry the machine and leave the door slightly open. This will prevent moisture from accumulating and prevent odors from forming.

A little caution, a long life

A little caution, a long life:

Proper machine placement and a little extra care during the winter can extend its lifespan by several years. By paying attention to small details, you can not only keep your machine safe but also avoid costly repairs.
