The Modi government of the Centre ceased selling rice and wheat to various states under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) some time ago. The states that provided free ration to the needy were directly impacted by this government action. Actually, the states had stopped receiving wheat and rice from the central pool once the government made this decision. Now that the first round of the e-auction did not receive a positive reaction from small traders, a change in strategy can be thought about. The first rice e-auction held has gotten only lukewarm feedback from the government.
Free ration: Karnataka’s current state of conflict with the federal government
Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra declined to permit states to take part in the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) for rice, saying the Centre will wait to make a decision till after the e-auction rounds have concluded. The central government and the Congress-ruled state of Karnataka are at odds over the provision of rice under the OMSS. The Centre asserts that it does not have enough rice in stock to meet demand if all the states begin requesting rice from the central buffer stock.
After several years, OMSS was finally launched
According to Chopra, 15 states and union territories, including Tamil Nadu and Odisha, support using the Center’s food stocks for the benefit of the nation’s millions of citizens. It shouldn’t be restricted to any one community or class. The Food Secretary informed the media that the launch of OMSS for rice had been delayed for many years and that it had been done so to warn consumers against potential price increases in the retail sector. The families receiving free ration will directly benefit if the sale of rice to the states is restarted towards the centre.
Free ration: The first e-auction for the sale of rice under OMSS
was held on July 5th, and FCI offered 3.88 lakh tonnes of rice. Only 170 tonnes of rice, however, were sold to the top 5 bidders. The following auction will take place on July 12. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get a positive reaction in the first round, Chopra advised. The OMSS rice sale is still going on. This will go on until March 31, 2024, and every week the sale will take place through an online auction.
When Chopra was questioned
about whether the government intended to alter the OMSS policy to boost rice sales. The Food Secretary responded to this by saying, “The government has choices, and it will utilise them if necessary in the upcoming rounds. We’ll observe and wait. The government is open to reforms.
