The official Twitter handle of the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted that the position of human resources in all departments and ministries was reviewed and directed that the government should recruit 10 lakh people in a mission mode in the next 1.5 years. Earlier in April, PM Modi had met top government officials and asked them to give priority to the process of filling vacancies in various government departments so that opportunities are created. According to government data presented in the Rajya Sabha in February, 87 lakh posts were vacant in central government departments as of March 1, 2020.

India’s urban unemployment rate rose to 12.6 percent in the April-June quarter of 2021 from 9.3 percent in the January-March quarter. However, it fell short of the 20.8 percent level seen during the first wave of the Covid pandemic.
