There are now just a few hours till IPL 2024 begins. The Royal Challengers Bangalore and the reigning champion Chennai Super Kings will square off in the tournament’s opening game. Before the competition began, some significant news was released. The IPL will also use the smart replay technology this time around. Tell us about this system’s features, operation, and intended audience.
‘Smart Replay System’: what is it?
To improve decision-making speed and accuracy, the Indian Premier League (IPL) will implement a “Smart Replay System.” As to ESPN Cricinfo, two operators of the ‘Hawk Eye’ technology who will be seated in the same room will provide direct input to the TV umpire with him and will be assisted by images taken from eight high-speed cameras installed on the field. Within this new system, the role of the TV broadcast director, who has been working to exchange information between the umpire and Hawk-Eye operators, will not be necessary.
The umpires’ task will be made simpler.
With the new system, TV umpires will be able to review a greater number of photographs than previously possible. Additionally, their live exchanges with Hawk Eye operators will be aired, allowing viewers to watch the decision-making process in action. The umpire will be able to examine more and sharper photographs from various perspectives with the use of this device, which will enable him to make precise calls about catches close to the boundary rope, caught behind, LBW, and stumping.
It’ll use fifteen umpires.
A two-day session for chosen umpires was recently arranged by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This will allow the fifteen or so Indian and international umpires to employ the smart replay system during the IPL. A comparable mechanism for referrals was used by the England and Wales Cricket Board in ‘The Hundred’ competition.
